Good nutrition during pregnancy ensures a healthier baby. The consequences of inadequate nutrition during pregnancy not only directly affects women’s health status, but may also have a negative impact on birth weight and early development. Low-birth-weight babies born often face severe short- and long-term health consequences. Low birth weight is a major determinant of mortality, morbidity and disability in infancy and childhood and may have a long-term impact in adult life.
Poverty in Guatemala is widespread in the countryside and amongst indigenous communities and is a central cause of malnutrition. Good nutrition is the foundation for good health and development. More than one third of child deaths worldwide are attributed to under nutrition. Millions of children globally are stunted (when children are too short for their age group), resulting from malnutrition. As growth slows down, brain development lags and stunted children learn poorly. Better nutrition means stronger immune systems, less illness and better health. Healthy children are stronger, learn better, and are more productive, enabling them to break the cycles of poverty and improve quality of life.
There are many aspects of malnutrition. Poverty is the number one cause of malnutrition in Guatemala, we feel that good health and education are key to rise out of poverty. We will address all aspects to better help the indigenous people help themselves through:
